2 questions about setting up domain registration!!
Posted by 21inchguns, 09-13-2001, 09:41 AM Hi there, I just have two questions regarding setting up domain registration on my website....... 1) If I take a bulk account with Stargate, will the API also take care of billing the customer etc....eg: do I just put it on my site, and then users can sign up through my site and the transaction will be processed automatically by stargate.... 2) If stargate does not take care of billing, and I just integrate an option of purchasing a domain with hosting packages on my site, this will not allow me to register that domain immediately, therefore I am concerned with issues that the domain they chose may get registered before I get the chance to set up their account and register the domain myself.....I realise there is only a very small chance of this happening, but I am just trying to cover all bases. I would appreciate any other info regarding this issue, ie: how are some of you guys implementing domain registration on your sites...... Thanks again to everyone here.........
Posted by GordonH, 09-14-2001, 08:59 AM Hello You will only be able to use the stargate API if you have a Windows dedicated server. It will not work on a windows virtual account. We don't use it because we need to integrate many TLd's into the one ordering system. We sell 300 - 500 domains per month and can handle that quite easily using manual registration. It would be impossible to have automatic registration across all those TLD's as some of these small country registries are a lady with a filing cabinet and a fax machine. In other words, there is no auto registry to plug into. We get about 1 in 700 orders where the domain has been registered already. In these are cases the domain was registered before the customer even ordered it from us but the Whois was not showing it when the order was placed. You would need to be registering a lot of .com domains before having instant regiostration became a real necessity. Gordon
