Connecting Domain to Dedicated Server?

Posted by SaintGTR, 04-21-2009, 01:28 PM
I have a dedicated server and a domain I bought from godaddy. The dedicated server currently runs from an IP. So if I were to visit 79.xxx.xxx.xxx/whm, I would be able to access WHM. However, how do I change the IP to go to a domain? So when I go to the domain xxxxx.com/whm I go to the server's whm, and so that I can use the domain to host my site. Is this also recommended to do? or would it be better to make a new account.

First, create NS and HOST records in Godaddy. Open the domain manager for your domain and add HOST entries with the IP addresse(s) that your dedicated server provider assigned to you. Ex: ns1.yourdomain.tld YOUR.IP.ADD.RESS ns2.yourdomain.tld YOUR.IP.ADD.RESS Then go to godaddy's nameservers section and add ns1.yourdomain.tld and ns2.yourdomain.tld as your nameservers. Now on the cPanel side, create an account with yourdomain.tld as the domain name (make sure to check "use nameservers from whois". Once all has propagated, you should be able to access http://domain.tld/whm Also, this is one of those times when server management can come in handy Best

I tried that and it refuses to connect.

Post or PM the domain name and I'll be glad to look it up for you. Best

In WHM go to Basic cPanel/WHM Setup then find Primary Nameserver and Secondary Nameserver and click on assign IP and make sure you assign them with the same ips you did in godaddy and that should get it working

Exactly as above, or from whm simply go to Edit DNS Zone, select your domain from the list, and add ns1/ns2 A records with the same IPs you put for the nameservers in godaddy. Regards

Same thing happens.

You don't appear to have the two NS records and two A records for the domain. You'll have to add two NS records (ns1 and ns2) and two A records for ns1 and ns2 in Edit DNS Zone.

Replace those two entries with: Domain.tld 14400 IN NS ns1.domain.tld. domain.tld 14400 IN NS ns2.domain.tld. ns1 14400 IN A FIRST.IP ns2 14400 IN A SECOND.IP

You need to remove the dot after ns1 and ns2. That should do it. By the way, where did you get the nameserver IPs from? Those are usually the server's two IPs. Anyway, just something to think about.
