I doubt anyone can help, but here goes....

Hi all, I doubt that anyone can solve this, but here goes... This is my first server, and I simply cannot get it to work. MY CONFIGURATION: Speedstream 4200 DSL modem w/ethernet line to NETGEAR Wireless Router (WPN824). The router connects with CAT5 cable to my Windows XP server computer (which has the latest Apache and PHP). Wirelss signal is used for my other computer. I am running Apache with no-ip as well. My site name is: 'http://worldveil.hopto.org' MY PROBLEM: I have set up HTTP port forwarding in my modem (which for some reason acts as a router as well) to port 80, with my server address as 192.168.254.10 The problem is that I cannot connect to my web site within my network. My friend is able to view the website from his home. I am not able to configure my NETGEAR router to accept the port forwarding of 192.168.254.10 because it isn't a "valid LAN address" --- but I can't configure my modem to use a different address either. 1. My modem is plugged into the Internet Port on my WPN824 2. My XP server is plugged into one of the four LAN PORTS on my WPN824 3. My modem is set to forward port 80 to 192.168.254.10 4. My WPN824 is set to forward port 80 to your XP server address 192.168.1.3 Obviously something is wrong with my guess, because just forwarding the modem to 192.168.254.10 doesn't seem like it could get my friend connected all the way through to your Apache server. IP ADDRESSES: Default Gateway: 192.168.254.254 XP/Apache: 192.168.1.3 Speedstream 4200 Modem: 192.168.254.254 NETGEAR: 192.168.1.1 Server (forwarded on 80): 192.168.254.10 The 'default gateway' is set to (according to an ipconfig run) 192.168.1.1 (NETGEAR router) However, the 'default gateway' in the NETGEAR router page says that "gateway IP address" is 192.168.254.254 (modem)... STATIC IP? Also, my Network Connections is set to 'obtain IP address automatically'. I have tried to set it to a static IP, but it doesn't work. The router wil not allow me to forward to the server with any IP that is ???.???.254.??? Unfortunately, this setup is very complicated and I think that something is conflicting. I have this felling that I'm really close but that something very small is in the way. Desperately hoping someone can help, Will

Firstly, why are you using Apache when you have IIS to your disposal. Secondly, can you access your website by typing in http://127.0.0.1 in your browser?

As RSNET-John has said, we can access your site fine here, i can't see any reason why you would need to try and get your site to work your end. 127.0.0.1 would work fine if you was on the server it self, however if you on another computer then just use the domain "http://worldveil.hopto.org'" and im sure the site would load fine also.

That is not a 'problem', it's the work of NAT. You cannot access your site via the external IP when you're inside the NATed network. Use the internal IP instead.

are you redirecting it to the servers ip, or the routers ip? as you stat its acting as a router, normaly routers use the 'main' ip. and give a server/computer a lan ip. you have to forward it to that Ip.. confusing my self here -.- PM if your still stuck mate.

This is fairly normal. Happens with my belkin wireless router. I know that some linksys routers allow you to view your external IP and see your internal website.

Wow. I am pleasantly surprised this many people replied...other forums got no where near this many ... 1. Yes, RSNET-John, 127.0.0.1 does redirect me to my server page. I don't know what this address is, but it works. 2. All of these (in browser) let me see my server page: 192.168.1.3 (IP for XP server computer) 192.168.254.10 127.0.01 localhost Unfortunately, http://worldveil.hopto.org still redirects me to my modem, which is 192.168.254.254. Is this a problem? Are any of you with servers out there only able to connect using these above (similar) IP's and routes? 3. Hugin, you said, "That is not a 'problem', it's the work of NAT. You cannot access your site via the external IP when you're inside the NATed network. Use the internal IP instead." What exactly do you mean by that? And yes, I know, this is my first server, I'm a newbie and I'm still learning a lot. Here is a couple of links to screen shots of my modem and router dialog pages for port forwarding. Maybe they will help explain my problem. http://cid-c0b17d42dfa381a9.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Will%20Drevo|4s%20Folders/speedstream.bmp http://cid-c0b17d42dfa381a9.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Will%20Drevo|4s%20Folders/netgear.bmp Thanks again guys. I hope this post clarifies this problem and that other people can learn the same things. Thanks for the help.

As mentioned, Your site seems to work fine here, when clicking http://worldveil.hopto.org Things I would suggest. On the lan, you can never get back to your lan by going to http://worldveil.hopto.org, because it will not resolve right. You would have to use a proxy like ToR in your browser to allow you to see it from the lan by going to http://worldveil.hopto.org. This works because you are forwarding your request through another *machine* on the internet, which in turn uses their IP and then reports back the information in which you requested. You however will have to go to the server on the lan by using it's IP address inside of the network, Unless of course you setup a dns server (BIND9) to work and do resolutions on the lan as well. Perhaps, You can access the webserver on the lan by even typing in it's machine name? http://your-pc-name/ or try the UNC \\yourpcname\folder-for-websites\ You may also want to install mod_security and spoof your web servers banner so people dont know your running apache, or at the very least, turn it down to minimum inside of the apache conf. Good Luck. Shaun
