Question about Server Load?

Posted by olddocks, 01-10-2008, 07:09 PM
i run about 3 sites all on a shared server with bluehost. All my 3 sites combined gets 20k unique visitors monthly and growing. Of course mysites does not involve any video or downloads. All plain simple sites using light weight mysql is this the time to go for dedicated plan? i am worried because in my cpanel the server load shows 22/4 cpu's. should i panic? Should i move to vps or dedicated plan? Any inputs could be more than helpful

I would say the load is because the server is oversold not just because of your websites. If you don't want to upgrade to dedicated/vps, you should do backup and download backup regularly.

It's the hosts responsbility to keep the load down. If the server gets sluggish, complain. No need to upgrade unless they tell you you're going over your resource limits.

bluehost is doing an apache / php5 upgrade, hence the higher than normal load number. it sucks but it's also an anomaly.

20k unique visitors per month can not make server load that high, seem they oversold too much, what you need is backup and move to an provider that do not oversell their server

i guess thats it! i never had problems with them for so far, just an anomaly i believe!

This is true, when you cause a problem, any decent host will contact you very quickly about it

In my opinion, a 22 load on a 4 cpu server is a bit high. Are you having the same load average all the time. The load can go high at times if the server is doing some backup or log processing. If you are not having trouble with accesstime of your domain or sluggishnees of websites, it is better to stick to the server. Sometimes VPS plans can be more horrible than shared ones. If your budget allows, it will be definitely good to move to a dedicated server so that you can have more control.

More than likely your problem is with Bluehost. I have been running into people that been having a lot of problems with Bluehost. I would look for a better shared hosting company. Any decent shared hosting company should be able meet your needs. I would recommend Downtownhost, A2Hosting, Stead Fast Networks, Dreamhost, or Site5. I personally have had a lot of problems with Bluehost and would not recommend them to anyone. I had three accounts for two years. I had nothing but problems on all three servers with excessive downtime, email didn't work, and cpu exceeds errors when trying to run dynamic content. Check out inetintegrity.com for more information.
